George Best was the National Soccer League's top-earner when he joined the Brisbane Lions in 1983. He was not in Ballon d'Or shape but he still knew how to appeal to the Australian crowd.
It was not a holiday for Best, he would have to play against his football nemesis, Tommy Docherty. Docherty had sacked Best when taking over as manager of Manchester United.
Coaching Sydney Olympic, Docherty's team would meet Brisbane in Best's debut. The game ended 2-1 with Best coming out on top. He did a few tricks and played to the crowd but did not score. In fact, during his stint with Brisbane, he did not find the back of the net.
Best returned to Australia in 1989 on a promotional tour for a TV company, picking up a game in Tasmania. He came back to Australia a year later with his old Manchester United teammate, Denis Law. This time, looking for a coaching job in the NSL. No one took him up on the offer.
