Indigenous Australians have made a rich and diverse contribution to football.

Harry Williams was the first to play in the FIFA World Cup. In 1974, he debuted against Chile. Since Williams, a host of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander footballers have made their mark on the game, including Jade North, Travis Dodd, James Brown, Lydia Williams, Kyah Simon, Jada Whyman and Allira Toby.

Before them, there were trailblazers such as John Moriarty, Charles Perkins and Bridgette Star.

Although history paints a picture of inclusion in parts, it has been nowhere near enough overall. In fact, only 1.2 per cent of players contracted to professional clubs are of Indigenous decent.

In 2016, the governing body for football in Australia launched the National Indigenous Football Championships. An encouraging step forward. Then there is the John Moriarty Foundation, which continues to grow every year. The foundation works in remote communities with Aboriginal children aged 2-16. Also in 2016, the Australian men's national football team donated $90,000 in match payments to support the foundation's work.

This design represents the future. To dream of more Indigenous Australians wearing the shirt of their national team.
