Australian sweeper-come-defensive midfielder, Paul Okon, began his football career in 1989 with the Marconi Stallions in the National Soccer League. Okon would make 49 appearances and score four goals before venturing overseas in 1991, signing for Belgian First Division A side, Club Brugge KV.
In 1995, he was awarded the prestigious Belgian Golden Shoe (De Gouden Schoen). An award given at the end of each year to the best player in Belgium, chosen by the national press and a great number of Belgian football personalities. He was the first Australian to achieve such an honour.
Okon would go on to captain Australia in its quest to qualify for the 2002 FIFA World Cup, eventually missing out to Uruguay in the CONMEBOL/OFC playoff.
