"Playing soccer for Australia would be like surfing for England." So said a young footballer on the popular national current affairs television show 60 Minutes to reporter George Negus in 1981. His name is Craig Johnston and he is one of the best footballers Australia has ever produced. Yet he never played for Australia.

Author, Jason Goldsmith, has brought together the short stories of the men who, for one reason or another, did not get to play for Australia (but could have) in Surfing for England: Our Lost Socceroos released by Fair Play Publishing. Johnston's story is the opener.

This design is a tribute to a Liverpool legend and a player who, for one reason or another, got away.
