The Voice of Australian Soccer T-shirt
Martin Royal began working as an announcer for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation in 1946. Royal's British accent fit seamlessly into the role during the public broadcaster's recruitment drive for new talent. He had served in Pacific waters with the Royal Navy during World War II and said he had "no specific training as such" for his newfound occupation in an adopted land.
His work in radio and television heavily featured his support for the growth of soccer in Australia, particularly throughout the fifties and sixties. Royal would become known as the voice of Australian soccer, taking the game across the country via the ABC.
FOX Sports commentator, Simon Hill, credits Royal as the game's vocal and linguistic benchmark. Royal passed away in 2020, aged 99.
