When the Australien team bus entered the Waldstadion in Frankfurt, during the 1974 FIFA World Cup opening ceremony, it was a moment all fans of the green and gold celebrated. Tournament host, West Germany, welcomed Australia to its first Finals appearance along with 14 other participating nations.
The O302 bus was manufactured by Mercedes-Benz between 1965 and 1974 out of the manufacturing plant in Mannheim. The O302 was sold as both a chassis and as an integral bus with Mercedes-Benz supplying the body. Over 32,000 were built before the model was superseded by the O303. The well-appointed Mercedes-Benz had one door. It was considered a work-of-art and transported all 16 teams to and from their matches during the tournament.
A fully preserved BR Deutschland O302 is displayed at the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart. This design is inspired by the O302 and includes all 22 of Australia's squad members.
