In 1975, 16 female soccer players, known as the Australian XI (all selected from New South Wales), participated in the first Asian Cup Ladies Football Tournament in Hong Kong. The Australians finished in third place, beating Malaysia 5-0 in the playoff. They narrowly missed out on a place in the Final, when defeated by eventual winners, New Zealand, 3-2.
The debate has raged over the years, whether the 1975 team should be acknowledged as the first-ever Australian women's national team, ahead of the official team dating 6 October 1979. Regardless, these pioneering women earned their place in history.
