Born in Sydney in 1926, James Edward "Joe" Marston would become an Australian soccer immortal. Joe Marston began his career at Leichhardt-Annandale, winning New South Wales premierships in 1946 and 1949.

Marston played his first series of international matches for Australia in 1947. By 1950, he was spotted by an English talent scout and went on to sign for Preston North End, making his debut with the then second division side in October. By February 1951, he was the starting centre-half, wearing the number five shirt.

In late 1951, Preston North End were back in the first division, where they would stay for the remainder of Marston's time at the club. In 1953, Marston's club narrowly missed out on the English first division title, losing out on goal difference to Arsenal.

The greatest moment in Marston's career came in 1954, when the hardworking defender played in the FA Cup Final against West Bromwich Albion. Preston North End would lose the match 3-2. Marston was the first Australian to compete in the FA Cup Final. He was later rewarded by his selection in the league’s best XI.

It was time to come home in 1995 but not time to call it a day. Marston returned to Sydney, signing once again for Leichhardt-Annandale, where he won another premiership in 1956. He stayed on with the club's predecessor in the NSW federation league with APIA Leichhardt from 1959 until 1964. In his last season, he won yet another premiership.

Marston was awarded an MBE (Order of the British Empire) in 1980. Since 1990, the national league grand final's best player award has been named after him. He was inducted into the football Hall of Fame in 1999 and in 2008, received the Professional Footballers Australia Alex Tobin OAM medal for his accomplishments and service to the game.

On 29 November 2015, Marston passed away. He was 89.
