The first Newcastle-based team to play in a national competition, Newcastle United (sponsored by Tooth and Co, makers of KB Lager) was formed in 1977. The club did not join the inaugural Philips Soccer League. Instead, entering the competition one season later in 1978.

Newcastle, known as KB United, took the league by storm. Attendance records were broken on a regular basis. KB even had Manchester United great, Bobby Charlton, make a guest appearance.

The team wore the traditional Newcastle colours of emerald, white and cinnamon but later changed to match the KB brand to their strip, playing in yellow with a red and black trim. While they often struggled to compete at the top of the league, KB were regular mid-table finishers.

In 1984, KB travelled to Melbourne to play the Knights in the National League Cup final, winning 1-0. KB set many crowd records during the late seventies, holding the record for the largest gate in a domestic game in Australia until the formation of the A-league, 18,367 against Sydney Olympic in 1979. A season when their average home crowd exceeded 10,000.

This design is a tribute to Novocastrian soccer.
