St George Budapest 1960s Home Jersey

St George Budapest blossomed forth from a tiny, almost casually planted seed. It all started in the early months of 1950 when a fairly large number of Hungarian migrants began arriving in Australia from war-torn Europe.

The club started as Ferencvaros. In 1951, they entered their team in the New South Wales Metropolitan League. One year later, the team was promoted to the Second Division where, under pressure, they had to change their name to the "unethnic" Europa FC.

In 1957, a "revolution" broke out against the soccer dictatorship in NSW, who were preventing clubs from promotion to the First Division. Europa were among the rebels. The NSW Soccer Federation was formed and Europa played under a new name, Budapest Soccer Club and eventually, St George Budapest Soccer Club.

St George Budapest became one of the first super clubs of Australian soccer, winning State championships and cups throughout the sixties and seventies. In 1971, St George Budapest won the Toyko International tournament. The first club in Australian soccer history to win an international trophy.

Perhaps the greatest endorsement for St George Budapest was the highest representation of players in the 1974 FIFA World Cup squad to travel to West Germany. Australia's first-ever appearance.

Investors and patrons, mostly Hungarian migrants, contributed to the development of "Soccer House" in Mortdale, Sydney, as well as building St George Stadium and associated training facilities after entering the Philips Soccer League in 1977.

St George Budapest is a name steeped in history.
